Collective Worship Resource for schools: Candlemas

Introduction

These three Candlemas reflections are intended to encourage pupils to look at the festival in three ways: biblically, spiritually and traditionally, that is:

Where the story comes from
What it means to Christians
How it has been celebrated over the years.

The resource uses words and imagery to reflect the symbols linked to the Candlemas story (e.g. Simeon is portrayed by a candle and Jewish artefacts to represent his faith and times) and its characters, all of which can be explored through observation and discussion.

Finally, it is hoped that the symbols will allow pupils to be able to understand what Candlemas might mean to them and find ways of relating to the Candlemas narrative through their own imagery.
