St. Gabriel's Background

St. Gabriel's College was set up in 1899 by Canon Charles Edward Brooke (a pioneer of Church schools south of the Thames and a member of the London School Board) and Miss Mathilda E. Bishop. In response to a question from Canon Brooke about what she would like to do, Miss Bishop replied that she would like to lead a Church of England College where young women could train to become teachers. She became the first of the six women principals of the College which was closed in 1978, though it lives on in the work of the St. Gabriel's Trust and the St. Gabriel's Programme.
