God’s Army goes inside the Salvation Army, revealing the diverse work and lives of those in the organisation that picks up where social services leaves off.

Founded in 1865 by William Booth, The Salvation Army is an evangelical church which began as a passionate and radical movement driven by its Christian principles and committed to helping those in need. God’s Army demonstrates that there is more to this organisation than brass bands and bonnets, dispelling the myth that Salvationists are out of touch with modern life.

God’s Army follows a series of colourful and committed characters who show that the Army is meeting the needs of the 1990s. From the effervescent Captain ANNE READ and her groups of volunteers who go to the Ukraine to take aid to underprivileged children, to the inspiring Territorial Commander, Commissioner JOHN GOWANS, this is a unique insight into the cutting-edge social welfare work provided by the Salvation Army, which is second only to that provided by the government.

This five part series also meets evangelist PHIL WALL, Salvation Army Mission Team Leader, who has upset traditionalists with pop music and 'in your face' evangelism and VALERIE HOPE who, with few resources and a big sense of humour, manages to provide help for the homeless, alcoholics, drug addicts and the elderly.
