Training
The INSET video that accompanies the Watch series is a very useful resource for training. You may want to use the video in a staff meeting to help colleagues in developing teaching and learning activities for RE at Key Stage 1. In addition, many Local Education Authorities have RE consultants or advisers (like Kathryn Wright in the video) who will be able to support you in developing effective practice in RE.
Using the Video
The INSET video that accompanies the Watch series last about 30 minutes. In a staff meeting the following ideas could be put together to form an INSET session for colleagues.
- Initial discussion about RE – individual strengths, concerns, what makes ‘excellent’ RE.
- Watch the video and complete one of the proformas.
- Discuss in groups ideas about the video, and then feedback as a whole staff.
- Introduce this website and some of the materials that can be found on it.
- Give colleagues an opportunity to identify further training needs.
Discussion Questions before watching the video:
- In groups describe an RE lesson that went well recently. Why was it successful?
- In groups, make a list of five things that you think would characterise an excellent RE lesson.
During the Video:
- How does Tina encourage the children to use their own experiences in the lessons?
- How does Tina reinforce an understanding of the main features in the church?
- How is your experience of RE similar and/or different to that of the teachers at Carpenter’s school?
After the video:
- What surprised you most about the experiences of the teachers?
- What kind of learning experiences were provided for the children?
- What issues might arise for you, if you were to use some of the strategies shown with your class? How might you overcome any difficulties?
- Consider the ‘reflect, relate, respond’ model for RE. What do you think about this?
