READING PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CHURCH
Prepare Suitable photographs, downloadable from this site.
- Children can work as a whole class, in groups or in pairs.
- Show the children a section of a church and ask them to speculate on the missing part.
- Then show the whole picture to the children very quickly. What did they see? They can discuss this in pairs. Then show them again. What did they see this time?
- Show the whole picture and discuss if their ideas were accurate.
N.B There is also an on-line version of this activity on this site.
Development The children could then...
- Brainstorm questions they have about the picture.
- Be given pictures and asked to invent titles or captions.
- Sort a group if pictures and justify their choices.
- Describe a picture of a church to a partner, who has to guess what it looks like. This would work well for the inside of a church.
- Write speech bubbles for people in the photograph, e.g. worshipping, preaching, praying, teaching.
