Cross-curricular Activities - Geography

Around our School: the local area 1

- Walking to the church – what do children notice on the way? Making sketches on the journey; drawing a transect diagram of the route.
- Looking at the changes, e.g. was the church always there? How old is it? Was it always a church?

Where in the World is Barnaby Bear? 5

In the Inset programme, TJ the Turtle plays the same role as Barnaby Bear.
- Finding and naming places that TJ has been to.
- Producing a wall chart of religious places that s/he has (or could) visit.
- Taking TJ to the church. Producing a diary of the journey and a weather report.
- Taking TJ further afield, e.g. on a pilgrimage.

Investigating our local area 6

- Pretending to be ‘cameras’ and looking through ‘viewfinders’. Drawing what they see in a frame. (This would be a suitable activity inside or outside the building).
- Revealing a photograph of a church and using visual clues with the children e.g. shape, colour, lines. An interactive whiteboard tool could be used.

Can buildings speak? 2c

- Identifying religious places from an aerial map.
- Links to the idea of change. Were churches always there? Is the church the oldest building in our area?
